한국인 최초로 캐나다 그리핀 시문학상(2019), 전미도서비평가협회상(2024), 독일 국제문학상(2025)을 잇달아 수상하며 말 그대로 세계인이 함께 읽는 이 시대 가장 뜨겁고 급진적인 언어 미학을 구축해온 김혜순 시인이 자신만의 언어와 감각이 발생되고 다시 발명되는 시작(詩作)의 내밀한 과정을 핵심 주제별로 구성한 『공중의 복화술- 문학은 어디서 시작할까?』(2026)가 문학과지성사에서 출간되었다. 시론집 『여성이 글을 쓴다는 것은』(2002)과 『여성, 시하다』(2017), 산문집 『여자짐승아시아하기』(2019)에 이어 시와 글쓰기에 관한 글들을 모은 네번째 책으로, 2020년 가을부터 2년 남짓 문예지 『악스트Axt』에 연재한 산문 13편과 2022년에서 2025년 사이 국내외 강연과 다양한 매체를 통해 발표한 산문들 가운데 6편을 추려 묶었다.

In this book, titled "Poetics," poet Kim Hyesoon narrates “the process by which a poet passes through a certain 'in-between' to reach a single poem” (Hee). Marking 47 years of her life dedicated to the craft of poetry, she reveals—with the concreteness of prose—the source of her writing and the poetic embodiment of her imaginative experiences. She explores where her poems come from, how they arrive, and what they seek to constantly achieve new emergence.

Although it takes the form of prose, her style remains undeniably infused with the poet’s unique rhythm—driven by a “desire to construct language out of murmuring and muttering, the indeterminate things” (Things of Anxiety). Each passage, resisting any simplification, is filled with a passionate voice that oscillates between lamentation and fury, antagonism and expansion.

The poet’s voice is both infinitely elegant and majestic as she preaches a methodology of “writing that hurls existence into absence, and absence into existence” (Mother of Death). She is possessed by a desire to define the form of women’s poetry and to discover the plurality of utterance through the 'ghost-narrator' hidden within—a voice that calls to other wandering ghosts who have disappeared, been abandoned, hurt, or died; a voice that exists before language itself (Tongueless Mother Tongue
