다케우치 시노부. 25세. 독신녀. 단기 대학을 졸업하고 어릴 적 꿈이던 교사가 됐다. 오사카 오지 초등학교 6학년5반 담임. 대학 시절 소프트볼 4번 타자. 동글동글한 얼굴의 미인이지만 말도 빠르고 손도 빠른, 말하자면 얌전한 것과는 거리가 먼 말괄량이 타입. 하지만 제자들과는 터놓고 지내는 화끈한 성격에 다정다감하고 추리력과 관찰력이 뛰어나다. 한마디로 쿨한 성격. 단점은 먹는 것에 약해 잘 낚인다는 점.

히가시노 게이고의 소설 <오사카 소년 탐정단>의 주인공, 시노부 선생의 프로필이다. 이번에는 가가 형사나 구사나기 형사, '갈릴레오' 유가와 교수가 아닌 초등학교 여교사가 장난꾸러기 제자들과 팀을 이뤄 좌충우돌 사건현장을 뛰어다니며 놀라운 기지와 추리력을 발휘해 거미줄처럼 얽힌 미스터리를 통쾌하게 풀어 낸다. 담당 형사들은 행동과 논리에서 앞서 가는 시노부 선생의 꽁무니를 쫓아다니며 귀동냥과 뒷수습에 바쁘다.

배경은 오사카. 히가시노 게이고의 고향이다. 에너지 넘치는 상업의 도시 오사카의 미로 같은 시장 통이 등장하고, 이 도시의 명물인 다코야키와 오코노미야키가 오사카의 정취를 돋운다. 작가는 오사카의 분위기를 살리기 위해 간사이 사투리를 많이 사용하고 있는데 역자 김난주가 유려한 번역으로 그 느낌을 고스란히 살려 냈다.

Takeuchi Shinobu, 25 years old, single. After graduating from a junior college, she fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. She is the homeroom teacher of Class 6-5 at Ōji Elementary School in Osaka. In college, she was the cleanup hitter—the fourth batter—on the softball team. Though she has a round, pretty face, she’s far from being the quiet type: she talks fast, moves fast, and is a bit of a tomboy. Warmhearted and open-minded, she gets along easily with her students, and she has remarkable powers of observation and deduction. In short, she’s cool and confident. Her one weakness is food—she’s easily tempted when something looks delicious.

This is the profile of Shinobu-sensei, the protagonist of Keigo Higashino’s novel Osaka Shōnen Tanteidan (The Osaka Boy Detectives). This time, instead of the familiar detectives Kaga or Kusunagi, or the “Galileo” physicist Yukawa, the story follows an elementary school teacher who teams up with her mischievous students to dash through crime scenes, using her wit and keen reasoning to unravel intricately woven mysteries with refreshing brilliance. The detectives in charge find themselves scrambling to keep up with her quick thinking and faster actions, often left to pick up the pieces after she’s already solved the case.

The story is set in Osaka—Higashino’s hometown. The vibrant, commercial city comes alive with its maze-like markets and the aroma of local specialties like takoyaki and okonomiyaki, which fill the scenes with the spirit of Osaka. To capture this lively atmosphere, the author makes extensive use of the Kansai dialect, and translator Kim Nan-joo’s smooth rendering preserves the flavor and charm of the original perfectly.
