Joseon (BCE 2333-BCE 238) was the heir to the legacy of the Hwanguk and Baedal empires. It was a dynasty ruled wisely by forty-seven danguns and was the center of civilization in Northeast Asia, with seventy vassal states, both large and small, paying tribute.
The Hwandan Gogi Lecture in Ganghwa first focuses on the Three Joseons, the issue at the heart of recent historical distortions, then examines the achievements wrought by the wise rule of the danguns of this Joseon empire. The empire thrived because it was imbued with the Spirit of Daehan (“Great Han”), the cultural and spiritual core of the empire, and illuminating this spirit provides the Korean nation with a historical vision for the future. The reader will also learn how the wisdom conferred by Joseon helped the so-called ‘sage-kings’ (Yao, Shun, Yu) of China survive and successfully overcome the devastation of the Nine Years’ Flood.
Ganghwa is a place where the spirit and life breath of the Korean na\-tion lives on. It was Korea’s gateway to the modern world, a sacred spot right in the middle of the territory that stretched from Mt. Baekdu all the way to Mt. Halla. It remains a treasure house, an open-air museum of the most ancient history of Korea, and it is also where the modern history of Korea began. Thus, the Hwandan Gogi Lecture Series, which will restore our great history, finally came to Ganghwa.
