치기 어린 명탐정 덴카이치 다이고로와 닳고 닳은 경감 오가와라 반조. 이 소설은 본격 추리 소설에 자주 등장하는 두 종류의 캐릭터를 내세우고, 역시 본격 추리 소설에 흔히 나오는 12개 패턴의 사건을 해결해 나간다. 그 과정에서 1인칭 시점과 전지적 시점을 넘나들며 본격 추리 소설이라는 장르의 상투성과 억지, 부자연스러움을 파헤치고 있다. 추리 소설 작가가 쓴 자기 고발적인 이 작품은 해학과 블랙 코미디적 요소가 돋보인다. 추리 소설 작가로서 느꼈을 고뇌와 작품 세계의 변화 과정, 추리 소설에 대한 뜨거운 애정도 엿볼 수 있다.

Through alternating first-person and omniscient perspectives, Higashino satirizes the clichés, contrivances, and artificial logic often found in traditional detective fiction.
