A series of 'Bilingual Edition: Korean Contemporary Novel' series, which selected representative short stories of contemporary Korean novels and recorded them simultaneously in Korean and English. This series, which took more than five years from planning to publication, was created with the participation of professional translators such as Jeon Seung-hee, a researcher at Harvard University's Institute of Korean Studies and Ph.D. .

The 4th volume of the series, Park Wan-seo's <Mother's Peg> series is a growth novel that depicts a girl's growth, but also has the character of realism that faithfully reproduces the past days of Korean society. This is because there are key events in modern history, such as the entry into modernization and the Korean War, in the girl's growth. Park Wan-seo is succeeding in narrating these important social and historical events based on personal experiences.

한국 현대 소설의 대표 단편작을 뽑아 한국어.영어로 동시 수록한 '바이링궐 에디션 : 한국 현대 소설' 시리즈. 기획부터 출간까지 5년이 넘는 시간을 들인 이 시리즈는 하버드대학교 한국학 연구소 연구원이자 비교문학 박사인 전승희, 캐나다 브리티시컬럼비아 대학의 민영빈 한국문학 교수 브루스 풀턴 등 전문 번역인들이 참여해 원작의 품격과 매력을 살렸다.

시리즈 4권 박완서의 <엄마의 말뚝> 연작은 한 소녀의 성장 과정을 그린 성장소설이면서, 한국 사회가 걸어온 지난 시절을 충실하게 재현한 사실주의의 성격을 동시에 지니고 있다. 소녀의 성장에는 근대화로의 진입과 한국전쟁이라는 현대사의 핵심적인 사건이 존재하기 때문이다. 이러한 중요한 사회사적 사건을 박완서는 개인의 체험에 의존하여 서사화하는 데 성공하고 있다.

저자소개

저자 박완서는 1931년 경기도 개풍에서 출생하여 서울대학교 국어국문학과를 중퇴했다. 1970년《여성동아》장편소설 공모에『나목』이 당선되어 작품 활동을 시작했다. 대표작으로『나목』『휘청거리는 오후』『엄마의 말뚝』『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』『너무도 쓸쓸한 당신』『아주 오래된 농담』『그 남자네 집』등이 있다. 한국문학작가상(1980), 이상문학상(1981), 대한민국문학상(1990), 이산문학상(1991), 현대문학상(1993), 동인문학상(1994), 대산문학상(1997), 만해문학상(1999), 금관문화훈장(2011) 등을 수상했다. 2011년 향년 80세를 일기로 별세했다
