1963년 미국에서 출판되자마자 베스트셀러가 되어 『대지』 이후 최대의 걸작이라는 찬사를 받은 이 작품은 한국의 구한말부터 해방까지를 배경으로 한 가족의 4대(주인공인 김일한을 중심으로 그의 부친, 두 아들 연환과 연춘, 손자 사샤와 양)에 걸친 굴곡 많은 가족사를 유려하게 담아내 ‘펄 벅이 한국에 보내는 애정의 선물’이라는 평가를 받았다.
명성황후 시해 사건, 일본의 강제 합병, 항일 독립 운동, 세계 2차 대전, 남북 분단의 조짐 등 파란 아래 놓인 한 가족의 일대기는 도저한 역사의 흐름 앞에서는 개인의 삶조차 자유로울 수 없음을 보여주고 있다.
하지만 이 작품이 단지 ‘역사 속 개인’의 비극만을 보여주는 것은 아니다. 작가의 말처럼 ‘용감하고 강인하며 감탄할 만한 낙천성으로 시련을 견뎌내는’ 이 작품 속의 주인공들은 펄 벅이 평생 동안 천착했던 ‘휴머니티의 승리’를 역설적으로 상징함으로써 가혹한 역경과 슬픔을 딛고 일어서는 ‘고결한 사람들’의 영혼을 따뜻하게 보듬는다.

Readers may wonder which parts of this novel are factual and which are fictional. The Korean family at the center of the story is based on realistic material that has passed through the author’s creative process. The historical elements—including the trial of independence activists, the arson attacks on Christian churches by the Japanese authorities, and, regrettably, the events that occurred on the day American troops landed at Incheon shortly after the end of World War II—are all factual.
All diplomatic figures, including those from the United States and Korea, are presented as they actually were. The political events are likewise drawn directly from history. The portrayal of President Wilson is based on facts verified by historical records, and every statement attributed to him in the novel is something he actually said. The reasons his words captured the imagination of people in Asia are also factual, as is the meeting in Paris between him and a Korean representative, who sought him out as did envoys from other small nations.
However, the individual characters were conceived through imagination, grounded in what I learned during my visit to Korea and what I observed while living in China. Whenever I portrayed Koreans in this novel, I endeavored always to be truthful to them.
