국견 진돗개 Korean Jindo, A National Dog

대한민국에는 진돗개, 풍산개, 삽살이, 동경이 등의 옛부터 내려오는 애견들이 수천년을 살아왔다. 그중 진돗개가 2005년 7월 6일 아르헨티나 세계애견연맹(FCI) 총회에서 20여 년 각고의 노력 끝에 드디어 국내 유일 세계 공인견 334호로 정식 등록되었다. 참고로 세계애견연맹 등록견은 약 345여 종이 있는데 그중 우리 진돗개는 334번째 공인견이다.

애견 선진국 하면 영국, 프랑스, 독일, 미국 등이 있는데 수십 종의 공인견을 가지고 있고 가까운 일본은 11종의 세계 공인견을 보유하고 있다. 각국은 자국의 애견을 특별히 관리하며 투자를 많이 하는데 우리 진돗개는 한국애견연맹, 민간단체와 진돗개를 사랑하는 많은 애견인의 도움으로 공인됐다.

고대부터 존재한 진도견의 유래는 다양한 설이 있으나, 섬에서 육지 를 오가는 교통이 불편한 진도의 지리적 특징 덕분에 한국의 토착견인 진도견의 품종이 잘 보전되어 왔을 것으로 받아들여지고 있다. 한국에서는 ‘개’ 또는 개를 의미하는 한자 ‘견’자를 붙여 진돗개나 진도견으로 부른다.

진도견은 주인에 대한 충성심, 귀가본능, 용맹성, 대담성, 결벽성, 수렵본능, 경계성, 비유혹성 등의 우수한 품성을 지니고 있어 많은 사람들로부터 사랑을 받고 있다. 뛰어난 방향감각을 가지고 있으며 한 주인에서 충성하는 타입으로써 주인이 바뀌었을 때 시간이 지남에 따라 새 주인을 받아들이긴 하나, 어려서부터 기른 주인을 향한 애착심은 평생 잃지 않는다.

For thousands of years, Korea has lived alongside indigenous dog breeds such as the Jindo, Pungsan, Sapsali, and Donggyeongi. Among them, the Jindo Dog achieved a historic milestone on July 6, 2005, when it was officially registered as the 334th internationally recognized breed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) at its General Assembly in Argentina, following more than 20 years of dedicated effort. For reference, the FCI currently recognizes approximately 345 dog breeds worldwide, making the Jindo Dog the 334th to receive official recognition—and the only Korean breed to do so.

Countries regarded as advanced in dog breeding, such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States, possess dozens of internationally recognized breeds, while neighboring Japan holds 11 FCI-recognized breeds. These countries invest heavily in the systematic management and preservation of their native dogs. The international recognition of the Jindo Dog was made possible through the combined efforts of the Korea Kennel Federation, private organizations, and numerous dog enthusiasts who cherish the breed.

Although there are various theories regarding the ancient origins of the Jindo Dog, it is generally accepted that the island geography of Jindo—where access to and from the mainland was historically limited—played a crucial role in preserving the purity of this native Korean breed. In Korea, the breed is commonly referred to as Jindogae (Jindo Dog) or Jindogyeon (Jindo Hound), using either the Korean word for “dog” or the Sino-Korean character meaning “hound.”

The Jindo Dog is admired for its exceptional qualities, including unwavering loyalty to its owner, a strong homing instinct, bravery, boldness, cleanliness, keen hunting instincts, alertness, and resistance to temptation. Possessing an excellent sense of direction, the Jindo Dog typically bonds deeply with a single owner. While it may eventually accept a new owner over time, the attachment formed with the person who raised it from an early age is never truly lost and remains throughout its lifetime.
