「안과 겉」은 카뮈의 서문과 함께 다섯 편의 에피소드로 구성되어 있다. ‘아이러니’, ‘긍정과 부정의 사이’, ‘영혼 속의 죽음’, ‘삶에 대한 사랑’, ‘안과 겉’이 그것으로 빛과 어둠, 프라하와 비첸차, 죽음과 태양 등으로 끊임없이 변주를 거듭하는 삶의 ‘안’과 ‘겉’을 주제로 다루었다. 카뮈가 말하는 안과 겉은 무엇일까. 카뮈의 답은 ‘하나의 덩어리’다. “이 극단적 의식의 극한점에서 모든 것이 하나로 융합되면서 나의 생은 송두리째 버리든가 받아들이든가 해야 할 하나의 덩어리처럼 생각되는 것이었다.” 「결혼」은 ‘티파사에서의 결혼’, ‘제밀라의 바람’, ‘알제의 여름’, ‘노트’, ‘사막’의 다섯 에피소드로 구성되어 있으며, 여행자 카뮈가 찾아간 장소들과 그곳에서 느낀 감회와 성찰이 글 속에 반영되어 있다. 풍요와 헐벗음은 서로 만나며, 자신의 찬란함을 과시하는 풍경 앞에 선 인간은 스스로의 위대함을 긍정한다. 신에게 의지하기보다 필연적 운명을 받아들이는 반항하는 인간이기에. 「여름」은 1939년에서 1953년에 걸쳐 쓴 산문들을 모은 것으로, 주제 면에서 「결혼」과 맞닿아 있다. 이 글들의 공통된 뿌리는 명확하다. 비록 서로 다른 시각에서 바라보고 있지만, 모두가 다 ‘홀로(solitaire)’라는 개별성의 주제를 다루고 있다. 1953년 이후 카뮈는 앞서의 ‘부조리’와 ‘반항’의 사이클에서 ‘사랑’과 ‘절도’의 사이클로 진입하며 그의 마지막 미완성 유작인 『최초의 인간』의 집필 준비를 시작한다. 세 편의 에세이에서 우리는 카뮈의 철학과 여행자의 여정, 그리고 치열한 문학성을 느낄 수 있다.

“Inside and Out” consists of five episodes, preceded by Camus’s preface: “Irony,” “Between Yes and No,” “Death in the Soul,” “Love of Life,” and “Inside and Out.” Through continual variations on light and darkness, Prague and Vicenza, death and the sun, the work explores the “inside” and “outside” of life. What, then, does Camus mean by inside and outside? His answer is “a single whole.”

“At the extreme limit of this extreme consciousness, everything fused into one, and my life appeared to me as a single whole that had either to be accepted or rejected outright.”

“Nuptials” is composed of five episodes—“Nuptials at Tipasa,” “The Wind at Djémila,” “Summer in Algiers,” “Notes,” and “The Desert.” The places visited by Camus the traveler, and the emotions and reflections he experiences there, are deeply woven into the text. Abundance and deprivation meet one another, and standing before landscapes that flaunt their brilliance, human beings affirm their own greatness—not by relying on God, but as rebellious individuals who accept the inevitability of fate.
“Summer” gathers prose pieces written between 1939 and 1953, and in terms of theme it closely aligns with “Nuptials.” The common root of these texts is clear: although viewed from different angles, they all address the theme of individuality, of being alone (solitaire).
After 1953, Camus moved from the earlier cycles of “the absurd” and “rebellion” into the cycle of “love” and “measure,” and began preparing to write his final, unfinished work, The First Man. Across these three essays, we encounter Camus’s philosophy, the journey of the traveler, and the fierce intensity of his literary craft.
