The three sons of Wang Lung—who rose from a poor farmer to a great landowner—live by beliefs entirely different from those of their father, who believed that only the soil endures unchanged. The eldest son, Wang Ta, believes that life consists solely of pleasures and indulgences that money can buy. The second son, Wang Er, despite possessing immense wealth, regards the accumulation of riches as life’s ultimate salvation until the very end. And even the third son, Wang the Tiger, who unlike his brothers relentlessly pursued lofty ideals, comes to realize that when ideals are forged into reality, unexpected traps and wounds lie in wait.

By illuminating the divergent lives of the three sons, Pearl S. Buck suggests that when an era changes and new masters of that era emerge, new forms of humanity are born within that transformation.

Furthermore, the sorrow of Wang Lung—who sought to control his children’s futures only to fail—powerfully reveals a painful truth: every child rises by stepping beyond the father, yet they too, no different from him, remain prisoners confined within the same cage of “human finitude.”
