유대인인 저자는 태생적 특성을 사상적 세계와 긴밀하게 연관시켜 홀로코스트라는 극악무도한 참상, 절대악으로 볼 수 밖에 없는 참상의 원인을 이해하기 위해 전체주의를 설명한다. 특히 전체주의의 기원을 반유대주의, 제국주의로 이어지는 역사적 흐름에서 찾고, 이에 따라 인간 존엄이 어떤 식으로 말살되어가는지 사실을 바탕으로 논리적으로 서술한다.

이번 제1권에서는 먼저 상식에 대한 만행, 유대인과 국민국가, 반유대주의의 발생, 유대인과 사회, 드레퓌스 사건 등 반유대주의를 주제로 이야기한다. 그런 다음 부르주아 계급의 정치적 해방, 인종주의 이전의 인종사상, 인종과 관료정치, 대륙의 제국주의, 국민국가의 몰락과 인권의 종말 등 제국주의에 관해 설명한다.

The first book by the political theorist Hannah Arendt, author of The Human Condition and Eichmann in Jerusalem. Upon its publication, The Origins of Totalitarianism immediately elevated Arendt to the ranks of the world’s leading figures in the history of political thought and revealed the distinctive foundations of her own political philosophy. Far from being a mere historical record, the book is a living work of thought that consistently argues for the overarching theme of political freedom.

A Jew herself, Arendt closely links her inborn identity to her intellectual world and explains totalitarianism in order to understand the causes of the Holocaust—an atrocity so extreme that it can only be regarded as absolute evil. In particular, she traces the origins of totalitarianism through the historical currents of antisemitism and imperialism, and on this basis logically demonstrates, with concrete facts, how human dignity is systematically annihilated.

In Volume I, she first addresses themes related to antisemitism, including assaults on common sense, Jews and the nation-state, the emergence of antisemitism, Jews and society, and the Dreyfus Affair. She then goes on to explain imperialism, discussing such topics as the political emancipation of the bourgeoisie, racial thinking prior to racism, race and bureaucracy, continental imperialism, and the decline of the nation-state and the end of human rights.
